Making a Bog Coat from Hand Woven Fiber: Cutting and Finishing Seams
Designed for people who are afraid to cut into hand-woven fabric or who just want to learn the best ways to handle their fabric and give it a professional look. .
Instructor – Donna Sebastian from Silver City, N.M.
Class Description: The bog coat is a simple garment that can be made from whole cloth with no waste, and requires only two cut seams. The class will focus on how to cut and finish seams using hand woven fabric. Donna will teach at least three separate seam finish techniques. You will also learn how to use interfacings in hand woven fabric and ways to bind the edge of the garment. All sewing can be done on other fabrics as well.
Class Fee: $85.00
WHAT YOU NEED FOR CLASS: Each participant needs a sewing machine. Students will need enough fabric (handwoven or commercial) to go around their widest part plus at least 4-10" for ease. If your loom is to narrow then you must sew two or more pieces together. For the length you will need to measure from the shoulder at the neck edge to however long they want the coat/jacket to be and add 15" to that measurement. Bog coats can be made from almost any weight material but preferably something that drapey.
Presently Donna Sebastian is teaching fabric design classes in Silver City, NM. She holds an associate degree in Fashion Design from Shaffy Community College and a Master's Degree from CSU in Fullerton. Donna was a custom dress maker in California before moving to New Mexico a few years ago.
October 11th 2-5pm SPINNING FOR COLOR
3 hour class by Jill Holbrook of Tucson
Color is so much fun to spin. However, those lovely hand-painted fibers do change when spun with sometimes less-than-pleasing results. In this class we will play with hand-painted roving exploring multiple ways of spinning and plying and learning to predict and manipulate the resulting yarn. Working with color, color theory and using colorful yarns in knitting and weaving will be discussed. Instructional fee: $20 Material fee $10
Students need to bring:
Spinning wheel and accessories as desired
(Handspindle is also acceptable)
Pencil and paper
Optional: Handpainted rovings for analysis
Handpainted roving for the class will be provided. Material Fee: to be announced
Coming February 6, 7 & 8, 2009
New Rep Weave: Design, Theory & Technique
CLASS FROM 9am to 4pm ...CLASS FEE: $175.00 for 3 day workshop
Joanne Tallarovic...Rep Weave
Joanne Tallarovic needs no introduction as she is a well known fiber art teacher, teaching around the country for many years now and author of " Rep Weave and Beyond" . Joanne lives in Flagstaff, AZ , teaches at the college and weaves professionally from her home.
Using the theory and technique of Swedish ripsmatta (or Scandinavian rep weave) in this 3-day round-robin workshop for weavers of all levels. Working on 4 and 8 shaft looms, students will weave samples of 2, 3, 4, 6 and 8 block designs.
Each student will recieve a questionnaire to determine which set of warping instructions will best fit you and your level of expertise. This questionaire will be sent to you after you have registered for the class, and you will fill it out and mail it to Joanne. It is important to register early so instructions can be sent out plus the class is limited to 12 students. The class fee has been kept low because of a grant given to BFAG by the Bisbee Foundation. This is a one time chance to get a national known teacher's workshop at such a resonable class fee.
